Olympic weightlifting is one of the world’s most enduring sports

Olympic Weightlifting

In comparison with other strength sports, which test maximal strength, weightlifting tests aspects of explosive strength. The lifts (Snatch and Clean & Jerk) are therefore executed faster and through a greater range of motion than other strength movements. Properly executed, the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk are fantastic tools to develop an athlete’s explosiveness, coordination and stamina.

Weightlifting increases an athlete’s power output, which has direct transfer to jumping ability and sprint speed. It also provides positive adaptive stress to assist in developing an athlete’s coordination, joint mobility and flexibility as well as body composition (increased muscle mass, decreased body fat).

Weightlifting is extremely technical in nature and as such must be instructed by a qualified coach in order to maximize benefit and minimize the chances of injury. At MOST our weightlifting program is led by David Swagar who has over twenty years experience in coaching weightlifting and is an NCCP level 2 trained weightlifting coach.
